A little taste of heaven in Hida

Watanabe is a reputable and established sake brewery, said to have been founded in the Meiji period (1868-1912). This business, which is a leader of sake production in the Hida area, is not only a creator of “Hourai”, a local sake that has long played an important role in the lives of the Hida people, but the historic building itself is also registered as an Important Tangible Cultural Property by the nation. Its unique ways of naming sake and designing their labels are well known throughout the country and are loved by many.

Tours of the brewery require reservations made at least five days in advance and do not limit visitors just to taking a quick look at the factory, but have gathered great praise from by allowing people to get up and close and personal with the “living brewery” that they have protected throughout the generations. The bronze statue just to the side of the main entrance is also an absolute must-see!
