Hida Kokubun-ji Temple was built 1250 years ago under the orders of Emperor Shōmu, being officially established in 746 CE with the Japanese Buddhist priest Gyōki as its founder. The foundations of a giant seven-story tower that was built at the same time also remain.
The main building was built during Japan’s Muromachi period (1337 to 1573). Other things on the premises include a gingko tree said to be over 1250 years old, the only three-storied pagoda in the Hida region, and a statue of the Medicine Buddha Yakushi Nyorai, which is the principal item of worship at the temple.
