The main building of Honkō-ji Temple is the largest wooden structure in the Hida region, is the most imposing temple in Hida City, and is one of the three temples that visitors make pilgrimage to every year during the “Santera Mairi” festival that occurs on January 15. The temple’s primary object of worship, a rare colored silk portrait of the Buddha that was endorsed by Rennyo, the 8th head priest of Hongan-ji Temple of the Jōdo Shinshū sect of Buddhism, has been designated an Important Tangible Cultural Property by the Gifu Prefectural Government.
On temple premises, there is also a stone monument celebrating Oh! The Nomugi Pass, a novel which tells the story of young women from the Hida region who crossed the Nomugi Pass to work in the booming silk industry of what used to be called the Shinshu region of Japan (present day Nagano Prefecture).
