Spring is in full bloom along the Shinsakai River

Over 1,000 cherry blossoms line the Shinsakai River in southern Gifu. When April rolls around, the riverbanks become a lively place, with many picnickers coming to enjoy the springtime feeling in a custom called Hanami. This place is known as Hyakujuro Sakura, and has become one of the most famous and popular places to see the cherry blossoms bloom. One can get to this magical place from Nagoya in just under an hour by train.

The cherry blossoms along the river were first planted in 1931. They were donated by a Kabuki actor known as Ichikawa Hyakujuro (which is where the name comes from). Come enjoy the beauty of spring in Gifu, Japan!
