Legendary samurai lord Saitō Dōsan, known as the “Viper of Mino” for his ruthlessness, had an adopted son named Saitō Masoyoshi, who is said to have built Kaneyama Castle, originally Karasuyama Castle, atop Mount Furushiro in 1537. To this day, this spot boasts some of the best views of Kani City and its surrounding areas.
Later, one of the three great unifiers of Japan, Oda Nobunaga, handed the castle over to one of his vassals, Mori Kanenari, who became the lord and renamed it Kaneyama Castle. These castle ruins still hold the memories of epic samurai battles.
Within the remaining stone walls, you can feel the spirit of the samurai from the Sengoku period, a legacy earning the site designation as a National Historic Site in 2013. The remains of the main citadel at the mountaintop offer sweeping views of the area and are a must-see.
