The Arakawa Toyozo Museum was founded by Arakawa Toyozo himself to deepen public understanding of pottery, especially Mino-Momoyama ware. Visitors can explore Arakawa’s former residence and pottery studio, and inside the museum you’ll find not only his works but also an impressive collection of historical pottery and excavated fragments. Immerse yourself in the history and artistry of this region, known for its vivid colors and diverse styles.
Arakawa is renowned for his role in uncovering the truth behind Mino-Momoyama-period ware, which was once believed to have been fired in the Seto district of Aichi Prefecture. In 1930, Arakawa excavated a shard of pottery in the mountains near Kani City in Gifu Prefecture, a breakthrough that revived the region’s long-lost Momoyama pottery tradition. For this discovery, as well as his distinguished career as a potter, Arakawa Toyozo was designated a Living National Treasure.
