Known as the inspiration for Kyoto’s beloved Ryoanji Temple, Gukei Zen Temple in Gifu boasts expansive grounds of 17,000 m² and a breathtaking dry landscape garden called the Garyu Rock Garden, or “Reclining Dragon Rock Garden”. Covered in white sand raked into delicate patterns and featuring three stones and a pine tree, this stunning Zen garden once had seven stones and is said to have represented a reclining dragon.
Founded in 1428, the temple has long served as a center for Zen Buddhist practice in the region. Beyond the rock garden, you’ll find the Tahoto Pagoda, which houses the Buddhist canon and has been designated a cultural property of the town.
As you wander through these tranquil temple grounds, you can truly feel the essence of Zen Buddhism.
