Cormorant fishing on the Nagara River!

The winter snow has melted and spring will soon be here, ushering in the new Ukai season. ‘Ukai’ is an ancient fishing method in which skilled fishermen use cormorant birds to catch Ayu sweetfish under a fiery brazier around dusk. Employed by the Emperor himself, these Imperial Fishermen’s skills are second to none!
Operating from late spring to early fall, taking a trip to Gifu to see this spectacle on the water is a must!
This year’s fishing season spans from May 11th to October 15th, and reservations can be made right now!
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience this breathtaking cultural activity from an audience boat right on the river!
