Beauty that’s charmingly unorthodox

Mosaic tiles, pint-sized tiles that are defined as being 50㎠ or smaller, vibrantly color everyday life through a diverse variety of hues and shapes.

The Kasahara-cho district of Tajimi City is Japan’s leading mosaic-tile producer, and in June of 2016, the Mosaic Tile Museum, Tajimi was built in the very center of the district with the purpose of showcasing the beauty of mosaic tiles.

The construction and design of the museum was led by world-acclaimed architect Terunobu Fujimori. Its unconventional outward appearance (just one glance and you won’t soon forget it) was inspired by the clay quarries from which clay and silica sand, used for the production of mosaic tiles, are taken from.
Inside the museum, one can see a diverse variety of tiles that are used in exhibits ranging from an enormous Showa era (1926-1989) collection of domestically produced tiles, to old-fashion bathroom utilities like sinks and bathtubs.

Won’t you come and visit a charmingly unorthodox art museum filled with shimmering mosaic tiles?
