If you visit Gifu, you should definitely try the local cider that is unique to the area.
The most important ingredient in cider making is of course, water . Gifu Prefecture is blessed with rich nature, and exceptionally clear streams, allowing delicious ciders to be produced in Gifu.
Let us introduce three of them.
The first is Nagaragawa Cider, which uses underground water from the Nagaragawa River, said to be one of the "Three Great Clear Rivers of Japan". It is made using the traditional method of sweetening it only with granulated sugar, and is characterized by a nostalgic and gentle sweetness. A portion of the sales will be used for activities to protect the forest at the source of the stream.
The second is Yoro Cider, said to be Japan's first cider with a history of over 100 years. This area, famous for Yoro Falls, uses the "Yoro Falls Kikusui Reisen Spring", one of Japan's 100 famous waters, which contains abundant minerals and a small amount of carbonation.
The third is Gujo Hachiman Natural Water Cider, made from spring water from Gujo Hachiman. The water used is high in minerals and does not easily carbonate, so it has a smooth texture and a sweet taste. As Gujo Hachiman is also famous for the Gujo Dance, another appealing feature is the unique design: if you look at the back of the label after finishing your cider, the silhouette of a woman dancing in a yukata appears!
Gifu Prefecture also has many other local ciders. When traveling to Gifu, be sure to look for ciders from the areas you visit.
