Northern Japan Alps & Mt. Norikura

  • Mt. Norikura is a large volcano standing to the south of Hirayu Onsen roughly between the cities of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture and Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. Its summit is Kengamine Peak, elevation 3,026 meters, one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains.

  • While Mt. Norikura can be climbed from lower elevations, buses run nearly to the summit, making it accessible to beginners. The Tatamidaira Bus Terminal stands at 2,702 meters above sea level, making it higher in elevation than Mt. Fuji’s fifth station. It is said to be the location with the highest elevation in Japan where buses can run. From the terminal, it takes about an hour and a half to reach Kengamine Peak. Beginners should be careful about altitude sickness and be sure to rest for at least 30 minutes at Tatamidaira before continuing to the peak. Even though it is easy to climb, it is still a 3,000 meter mountain, so be sure to bring at least the minimum climbing equipment and submit a hiking registration form.

As you ascend, you’ll pass through a variety of landscapes, including lush forests, alpine meadows, and volcanic terrain, each offering a distinct beauty. The panoramic views from the summit are truly breathtaking, with vistas that stretch across various mountain ranges including the Japanese Alps (Northern Alps, Central Alps, Southern Alps).

To protect nature, private car use is restricted at Mt. Norikura. Mt. Norikura is home to rare animals such as grouse and native alpine flora, which are especially vibrant in the summer, when colorful wildflowers blanket the slopes. In contrast, the autumn season brings stunning foliage, painting the landscape in brilliant reds and oranges. Whether you’re seeking breathtaking views, natural beauty, or a relatively easy climb, Mt. Norikura is a destination that promises an unforgettable experience.

Located near the summit of Nishiho Maruyama, the hut is renowned for its exceptionally delicious Nishiho Ramen. It is so popular that some people hike up there just for the ramen! From the hut, it takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the summit of Nishiho Maruyama, where you will be rewarded with eye-popping scenery of Kamikochi and the Northern Japan Alps.

During snowy conditions, roughly December to April, hikers must use winter gear and crampons. Hiking with someone experienced in climbing snow-covered mountains is recommended to avoid getting lost. Some trails may be subject to route changes, so hikers should confirm their route in advance.

    Ski Resorts

  • Skiing in the Okuhida region offers a serene and authentic experience, away from the crowds of more famous ski resorts. Okuhida is home to several hidden gems, each providing unique opportunities for winter sports enthusiasts. The region’s ski resorts, such as Hounokidaira (15 runs, four lifts), Hirayu Onsen (three runs, two lifts) and Hida Takayama (five runs, two lifts), are known for their powdery snow, stunning alpine views, and a tranquil atmosphere that is perfect for those seeking a more peaceful skiing adventure.

  • One of the highlights of skiing in Okuhida is the blend of outdoor activity and relaxation. After a day on the slopes, visitors can unwind in one of the many natural hot springs (onsen) that the region is famous for. These outdoor baths, often surrounded by snow-covered landscapes, offer a rejuvenating way to end a day of skiing.

  • The area’s ski resorts are suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced skiers, with a variety of runs that cater to different abilities. Additionally, the proximity to Takayama and Shirakawa-go allows for easy exploration of traditional Japanese culture, making a ski trip to Okuhida not just about the slopes, but also about experiencing the rich cultural heritage of the area.
