Experience the spirit of old Japan in the hidden sanctuary of Gifu’s oldest wooden temple

Nestled in the mountains of Seki City, the main hall of Nichiryuho-ji Temple is located at the end of a lush green mountain path and is built in a stage-like structure resembling Kyoto’s famous Kiyomizu-dera temple, earning it the nickname “The Kiyomizu of Mino”.

The temple grounds are also home to a two-story pagoda that is said to have been constructed by Hojo Masako during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The founding of Nichiryuho-ji Temple is attributed to the ancient figure, Ryomen Sukuna, whose statue is enshrined in the main hall. Usually only shown to the public once a year, the temple occasionally offers special exhibitions for visitors where goshuin stamps can be purchased.

Zen meditation and sutra copying experiences are also available in the main hall with beautiful panoramic views (reservation required).
