
Expert craftsmen brave the freezing waters to wash off the natural rice glue and rinse the freshly dyed fabrics, making the colours even more vibrant! 
The Watanabe Dyehouse uses the “kachin dyeing method” which uses soybean juice as pigment which is carefully hand-painted on these traditional carp streamers. 
Known for their expert use of indigo dye, the Watanabe Indigo Dyehouse has been operating for over 400 years, maintaining the traditional techniques.
Gujo Hachiman is a small castle town famous for its pristine waters, is steeped in tradition. Among its many cultural treasures is the 430-year-old art of indigo dyeing.
Early each year, skilled craftsmen brave the icy rivers for Kanzarashi, the washing of carp banners in freezing water. These banners are made using traditional methods, like using soy bean paste and natural dyes. During Kanzarashi, the paste is then washed away, and the cold water tightens the fabric and brightens the vibrant colours.
