The Shoka Take House of the post town of Mitake-juku, along the old Nakasendo Highway that stretched across the country during the Edo period. The main building is thought to have been built in 1877, with the Shoka Take House fulfilling their role as affluent merchants ever since the area began to see a great influx of people and goods coming via the Nakasendo Highway.
The building’s façade, beautifully maintaining an appearance befitting a wealthy merchant family, is one of few Edo period buildings that are gradually disappearing from Japan, and the Shoka Take House’s main building and tea room were designated Important Tangible Cultural Properties of Mitake-cho in 1997.
Guests can experience weaving every Wednesday and Saturday (except for the first one each month) in the exhibition building at 1:30pm. (Adults: 200, children: 100)
